Friends of the Earth Action Endorses Anita Earls for North Carolina Supreme Court

DURHAM, N.C. – Friends of the Earth Action today endorsed Anita Earls to be the next associate justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

“In North Carolina, Anita Earls’ work at the intersection of the law and environmental justice has protected local communities from polluting corporations that sought to take advantage of minority and low-income communities,” said Erich Pica, president of Friends of the Earth Action. “As a justice on the state Supreme Court, she will be a steadfast public servant, dedicated to the rule of law and the principle of equality.”

The endorsement comes as North Carolina struggles with a highly gerrymandered political map. Friends of the Earth has been on the frontlines of fighting for the drawing of equitable lines on the congressional maps in the state.

“We need a state Supreme Court justice that will put the people of North Carolina first,” said La’Meshia Whittington-Kaminski, North Carolina campaigner at Friends of the Earth Action. “We need an independent court that follows the same rules for all North Carolinians. Anita Earls will be an impartial Justice who will rule fairly and justly in every case before the court.”

Since returning to North Carolina in 2003, Earls has taken on multiple issues central to protecting the environment in North Carolina, including putting a stop to the reopening of the White Street Landfill in Greensboro and taking on Waste Industries as they sought to circumvent state law to open massive landfills in poor and minority communities.
