FOE Action welcomes Clinton KXL opposition
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Secretary Hillary Clinton has announced her opposition to a presidential permit for the Keystone XL pipeline. Secretary Clinton was the head of the State Department when Canadian oil company TransCanada applied for its original permit. A timeline of the conflicts of interest that took place in the State Department review is available here.
Friends of the Earth Action President Erich Pica released the following statement in response to the announcement:
I welcome Secretary Clinton’s announcement opposing the Keystone XL pipeline. She joins Bernie Sanders and others who oppose the climate-destroying project. This is an important about-face for Clinton, who was initially inclined to support the pipeline during her tenure as Secretary of State.
This reversal is a testament to efforts of farmers, ranchers, indigenous people and environmentalists who came together to stop this pipeline. Now is the time for President Obama to reject the pipeline outright, and for Secretary Clinton to use the Keystone XL test to advocate for keeping all fossil fuels in the ground.
