National Environmental Organizations Endorse Shenna Bellows for U.S. Senate for Maine

WASHINGTON — Friends of the Earth Action and the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund are endorsing Shenna Bellows for U.S. Senate, challenging Susan Collins.

As the past executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine, a former lawmaker, and current Maine Secretary of State, Bellows has the experience and progressive ideals that Maine needs right now. In the Maine Senate, Bellows consistently voted to protect the environment, earning all perfect scores on Maine Conservation Voters’ yearly environmental scorecard. As current Secretary of State — the first woman to hold the position — Bellows has worked to secure and safeguard voter registrations and to hold U.S. Customs and Border Protection accountable by refusing to issue unmarked license plates to federal law enforcement agencies.

In the U.S. Senate, Bellows will work to ensure that the people of Maine — and all Americans – have healthcare, affordable housing, and a world safe for their children and grandchildren.

Erich Pica, President, Friends of the Earth Action, said: “Shenna Bellows knows well the issues facing Maine and the country right now. She stood up to Donald Trump and ICE. She’s fought for workers’ rights, civil rights, and democracy. And she’s worked to keep our environment healthy for generations to come. We are proud to endorse Shenna Bellows for the U.S. Senate.”

Rachel Rilee, Deputy Oceans Political Director at the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund, said: “Shenna Bellows will be a powerful voice for Maine in the U.S. Senate. Maine needs a senator who will take on corporate polluters, reject the influence of powerful special interests and fight relentlessly for the people, places and wildlife that make this state extraordinary. As Maine’s lands, waters and communities face growing threats, Bellows has the courage and conviction to deliver bold action in Washington and protect the state’s future for generations to come.”
