Dishonest McCain ad blames Obama for gas prices

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new ad from the John McCain campaign blaming Barack Obama for rising gas prices prompted the following response from Friends of the Earth Action President Brent Blackwelder:

“It’s only July, but we’re already seeing dishonest and hypocritical gutter politics from John McCain. Flip-flopping John McCain said just two weeks ago that our dangerous dependence on oil ‘has been 30 years in the making,’ but now he tries to blame Obama—even though it’s McCain who has been in Washington for 26 years. Here’s the truth. The Bush/McCain drilling plan won’t lower gas prices but will increase our over-reliance on oil. We can provide relief from high gas prices while growing the economy, protecting our security and fighting global warming by focusing on conservation, clean energy and transportation choices instead.”

McCain’s new TV ad contradicts his past statements:

IN MAY, MCCAIN SAID IT ‘WOULD TAKE YEARS’ TO GET NEW OIL FROM DRILLING—AND THAT DRILLING WOULD NOT SOLVE DEPENDENCE ON FOSSIL FUELS

“[W]ith those resources, which would take years to develop, you would only postpone or temporarily relieve our dependency on fossil fuels,” McCain said. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/18/mccains-offshore-drilling_n_107872.html)

TWO WEEKS AGO, MCCAIN SAID OIL DEPENDENCE HAS BEEN ’30 YEARS IN THE MAKING’

“Let me give you a little bit of straight talk on energy. Our dangerous dependence on foreign oil has been thirty years in the making, and was caused by the failure of politicians in Washington to think long term about the future of the country,” McCain said. TODAY—A NEW TACK IN DISHONEST MCCAIN TV AD

TV ad script: NARRATOR: Gas prices 4 dollars, 5 dollars, no end in sight. Because some in Washington are still saying no to drilling in America — no to independence from foreign oil. Who can you thank for high prices at the pump? Obama-Obama-Obama. One man knows we must now drill more in America and rescue our family budgets. Don’t hope for more energy, vote for it. McCain. MCCAIN: I’m John McCain, and I approve this message. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiTpS4MK3D8)
