Buttigieg’s climate plan fails to deliver

WASHINGTON –Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg unveiled his climate plan recently.

Nicole Ghio, Senior Fossil Fuels Program Manager at Friends of the Earth Action, issued the following statement in response:

Mayor Pete Buttigieg knows the importance of local leadership in the climate fight, as shown by his commitment to convening local and regional leaders. However, his climate plan falls short of the ambition we need to avert the crisis. Testing the climate impacts of all new infrastructure is a good first step, but we need to stop all new fossil fuel infrastructure and end fracking.

Moreover, relying on environmentally-harmful false solutions like biofuels will only worsen climate change. Carbon friendly farming practices and forest conservation are critical, but the Mayor should not promote these in the context of offsets, which sets up a misleading choice between reducing fossil fuel emissions or saving forests. We need to do both. Despite some bright spots, Mayor Buttigieg’s climate plan fails to deliver.
