Ossoff’s strong showing a victory for Trump resistance
WASHINGTON, D.C. – After a grueling, months-long campaign that saw more money spent than any other House of Representatives race in history, Karen Handel defeated Jon Ossoff tonight in a close special election to represent Georgia’s 6th Congressional District.
Friends of the Earth Action endorsed Ossoff in March.
Friends of the Earth Action’s Senior Political Strategist Ben Schreiber issued the following statement:
Jon Ossoff’s near victory in this conservative district shows that voters everywhere are rejecting Donald Trump’s radical agenda and the members of Congress who refuse to hold him accountable. While the defeat is disappointing, it is important to remember that this seat has been held by Republicans since 1979 and that Tom Price won reelection by over 20 points in 2016. Ossoff’s dynamic campaign serves as another reminder that progressive ideas excite and motivate voters across the country.
Tonight’s close result is a promising sign that 2018 will be a full repudiation of Trump’s polluter agenda. Progressives must redouble their efforts and make sure we continue to build the resistance and the American people must resist Trump in every congressional district across the country.
Even in defeat, Ossoff’s strong showing in the face of a river of dark money shows the strength of people power. Ossoff’s opponents had to resort to false and misleading ads to defeat him.
