Friends of the Earth Action applauds the historic selection of Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for Vice President
WASHINGTON – Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden announced today he has selected Senator Kamala Harris to be his running mate. Senator Harris is the first Black woman to run for Vice President and if elected she’d be the first Black woman to hold the position.
Erich Pica, president of Friends of the Earth Action, issued the following statement in response:
It is exciting to see Vice President Biden follow through on his commitment to name a woman as his running mate on the Democratic ticket in 2020. For too long women, particularly women of color, have been locked out of our highest elected offices and Senator Harris’ nomination puts a giant crack in that glass ceiling.
Senator Harris’ commitment to environmental justice and her desire to hold corporate polluters financially and criminally accountable for their destructive behavior is a welcome sign. We hope her inclusion on the ticket provides another opportunity for Vice President Biden to increase the ambition of his climate plan and cements climate justice and climate equity as a priority for their administration.
