FOE Action endorses Jamie Raskin for U.S. House of Representatives

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Friends of the Earth Action today announced its endorsement of Jamie Raskin, of Maryland, for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Friends of the Earth Action President Erich Pica issued the following statement:

In his three terms as a Democratic State Senator for Maryland, Jamie Raskin has been an ardent advocate for the protection of our environment and democracy, both cornerstones to Friends of the Earth’s mission. Raskin’s record is impressive: he successfully introduced the Green Maryland Act compelling state institutions and agencies to implement green purchasing rules and composting and recycling plans; sponsored MD SB921 – Clean Energy Jobs-Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard Revisions; and pushed for an outright ban on fracking in Maryland, where others only sought a moratorium. In addition, he has committed to a bold goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent in 2030, if elected, and is a strong proponent of carbon-taxing. These commitments all make him a valuable champion for the environmental movement.

Likewise, Raskin’s proven expertise in constitutional law makes him a crucial partner in the effort to reform voting rights and campaign finance. He introduced the Potomac Compact – an anti-gerrymandering model for fair representation. Raskin also proposed the National Popular Vote compact, with FairVote, to guarantee that the candidate who receives the most popular votes nationwide becomes president. In addition, he has pushed to get Big Money out of politics by fighting for a constitutional amendment to repeal Citizens United and broader disclosure of public finance spending. We need more of Raskin’s energetic and constructive brand of politics in Congress to protect the rights of U.S. citizens to a healthy and just world. We are proud to endorse Jamie Raskin in his campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives.
