Triumph in Georgia: Jon Ossoff landslide reinforces resistance to Trump

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a major triumph for the Democratic Party, Jon Ossoff finished tonight at the top of a field of eleven Republican and four additional Democratic candidates. The race was for the seat previously held by Republican Tom Price, who now serves as Trump’s Health and Human Services Secretary. Friends of the Earth Action endorsed Jon Ossoff in March.

The race will move to a runoff election on June 20, 2017.

Friends of the Earth Action’s Senior Political Strategist Ben Schreiber issued the following statement:

Congratulations to Jon Ossoff’s campaign for all of their hard work in tonight’s landslide in the race for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District. Ossoff’s strong finish sends a strong message to the Republican Party that voters are already fed up with Trump’s conflicts of interest and his lies. Less than 100 days into the new administration, this election sends a powerful signal to Trump that the American people oppose his extreme agenda.

Friends of the Earth Action is proud of Jon Ossoff’s impressive record of fighting for the environment and standing against corporations. In the House of Representatives, he will be a champion for clean energy development in Georgia and for protecting our air, land and water nationwide.

Tonight’s powerful result will build momentum toward electing progressive candidates across the country. We hope tonight’s landslide will encourage the Democratic Party to support progressive candidates that are capable of defeating Trump and his enablers.
